Description Comoy's John’s Fairmont Model JOHN’S Pipe Shop, Los Angeles Rare 439 Pencil Shank Billiard c1920’s, Gorgeous, Fine Shape! Here’s a wonderful vintage pipe, made by Comoy’s for a pipe shop from early times, JOHN’S PIPE SHOP, in LOS ANGELES. This one is a Fairmont model. Here’s some info from Pipedia about the shop: John’s Pipe Shop from Los Angeles was started in 1908, and looks like into the 1980’s or a little longer. They had pipes made for them by European companies, one of which is Comoy’s for sure. This one is a Fairmont. As seen on their matchbook cover ad, their “Exclusive Brands” included Wilshire, Rosemore, Extra, Fairmont, Silvermont and Avalon. I’ve had some early pipes made for them by Comoy’s. It was likely produced in the timeframe of 1920’s to mid-1940's for sure. The dating is determined by the Country of Manufacture stamp “MADE IN ENDLAND” with IN in the center of circular stamp, and that was only used for a short period. According to Derek Green this indicates a 1920’s to 1930's dating for a Comoy’s or sub-brand pipe. From a Derek Green article about Dating Comoy’s on Pipedia: Made in England. This is stamped in a circle with “Made” at the top, “in” in the middle, and “England” forming the bottom of the circle... I have seen this stamp on a Cecil dated as early as 1910 and on an Old Bruyere of 1921 and then only on pipes from the 1930s. However, in an article by GL Pease: The third period, approximately 1938 through the early to mid-forties or so, has the same "COMOY'S" stamp and grade, with the country of origin changing to the circular "MADE IN ENGLAND," the word "IN" in the center of the circle formed by the words "MADE" and "ENGLAND." See composite photo of the early shop, and match covers. This pipe is stamped John’s Fairmont , which is one of their noted “Exclusive Brands” from their shop. The shape 439 is not shown in the Comoy’s shape chart on Pipedia, and I’ll seek to get it added soon. I’d call it a pencil shank billiard, with a long taper cut stem, retro-styling. JOHN’S was a famous tobacconist shop in Los Angeles. You can see in the photo collage when a horse drawn carriage advertised for the business! As far as condition, the pipe is in excellent shape, with light normal wear shown on the stem but the bowl looks phenomenal. The bowl has gorgeous grain patterns, very rich, vivid color, good contrast. It’s got easy to read stampings too, a rare and early collector’s pipe. The bowl interior is nicely seasoned from use and has a light cake, draw hole is bottom center, draws easy. The stem is original with the (F) logo on the left side, with some shallow tooth marks. It weighs in at about .75 ounce. The pipe is freshly polished and ready to smoke! Click photos BELOW to enlarge, and see more photos! I buy pipes and collections, message me for details, if interested! Please see my other Auctions! Combined shipping of multiple items no problem, wait until auctions end to pay, and I’ll send a combined invoice! Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner, pipe stand not included with any pipe.
