Description Comoy's ANCESTOR , Made in England 110 Billiard, Rusticated Wood Grain Gorgeous Hand-Carved, c1920's-30's Sasieni-Like RUSTIC, It’s Near Mint Here's an early model by Comoy's, an ANCESTOR, with the linear MADE IN ENGLAND stamp. The model is from very early in the Comoy’s line-up, some made in a smooth finish and some with this hand rusticated finish. The bowl finish reminds me of early Sasieni pipes, with the deep hand-carved grain patterns known as RUSTIC, and I think was intended to compete with Sasieni. These early Comoy’s pipes are great collectors in my mind, as they are well seasoned from age, and this one is unusually early. And if you get one in excellent condition, like this one, it’s likely to be a great smoker, and fun to talk about. Based on the Country of manufacture stamp, it was produced in the timeframe of 1920’s to mid-1940's. The dating is determined by the “Country of Manufacture” stamp “MADE IN ENDLAND” which was mostly a round stamp, with IN in the center of circular stamp, and that was only used for a short period, or in rare cases a horizontal single line of text. According to Derek Green this indicates a 1920’s to 1930's dating for a Comoy’s or sub-brand pipe. From a Derek Green article about Dating Comoy’s on Pipedia: Made in England. This is stamped in a circle with “Made” at the top, “in” in the middle, and “England” forming the bottom of the circle... I have seen this stamp on a Cecil dated as early as 1910 and on an Old Bruyere of 1921 and then only on pipes from the 1930s. However, in an article by GL Pease: The third period, approximately 1938 through the early to mid-forties or so, has the same "COMOY'S" stamp and grade, with the country of origin changing to the circular "MADE IN ENGLAND," the word "IN" in the center of the circle formed by the words "MADE" and "ENGLAND." So, this one would be safely set to be from the 1920’s to mid-1940’s timeframe. The pipe is in terrific shape, near mint, with just light normal signs of use. The bowl interior is seasoned, and in great condition. The stem is original, has a Fleur de Lis logo on the side. Stem has just very light tooth wear, nicely cut also. The pipe draws well, with draw hole bottom center, weighs in about 1.0 ounce. This is a classic early Comoy’s and this collectible in my thinking. Lightly polished and ready to smoke! I buy pipes and collections, message me for details, if interested! Please see my other Auctions! Combined shipping of multiple items no problem, wait until auctions end to pay, and I’ll send a combined invoice! Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner, pipe stand not included with any pipe.
